Case Study - Maddison Jane

'The quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail is just amazing, the weavers are incredibly talented. The intricate detail and curves in each of my designs was perfectly translated with the hand-tufted wool into a rug.'

As a Textile Artist and Designer I create designs for fabric and screen-print limited editions for my label ‘Maddison Jayne’. I enjoy incorporating the handmade element throughout all of my work. I design and hand-print fabric, dye silks and velvets along with weaving decorative braid and trims for my upholstered furniture and lampshades.

I found Rug Couture in 2013 when I was completing my honours year of a Visual Arts degree majoring in Textiles (ANU). My Honours project focused on exploring the idea of excess pattern and colour through the use of hand-printed fabrics within an interior setting. There was no better way to complete this setting and project than to have one of my print designs hand-tufted into a bespoke rug. The transformation of my print design into a rug further enhanced the idea of excess pattern while using other elements of handmade textiles by getting a hand-tufted rug.

'While on display the rugs are always a conversation starter and receive an abundance of positive feedback about the design, vibrant colours and the high quality of the overall product.'

I have since had a couple more of my print designs transformed into rugs. I especially love designing circular rugs. These have been used as display items alongside my hand-printed textiles for solo and group exhibitions as well as a number of pop-up shops. People are often surprised that they are hand-tufted due to the intricate design and quality, which is definitely a credit to Rug Couture and the weavers.

The process of obtaining a bespoke rug in my own design is just as exciting as receiving the finished product. Lee makes the process hassle free, while I send designs back and forth getting mock up images made to see what the finished product will look like. This allows me to tweak my design slightly so I get the exact look I am after. I was able to order colour samples to ensure that I could match the dyed wool to my hand-printed fabrics. Once my design and colours had been finalised I was kept up to date with how my order was going.

The quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail is just amazing, the weavers are incredibly talented. The intricate detail and curves in each of my designs was perfectly translated with the hand-tufted wool into a rug. My favourite part of the process is unwrapping the package and unrolling my rug for the first time. They are such beautiful works of art in their own right.

I look forward to working with The Rug Couture team again to create my next rug.
